That meant clarifying our role, rebuilding systems, and strengthening relationships across Dallas–Fort Worth.

We expanded partnerships with bike shops, nonprofits, healthcare providers, advocacy groups, and local agencies—recognizing that safer streets and more welcoming bicycling culture only happen through collaboration.

Education That Meets People Where They Are
Education remained at the heart of BikeDFW’s work.

Throughout the year, we supported and delivered:

Youth bike rodeos and safety events

Adult Learn-to-Ride and skills classes

Community education focused on confidence, visibility, and safe riding

These programs weren’t just about bikes—they were about access, independence, and helping people feel like they belong on our streets and trails.

Community, Connection, and Showing Up
BikeDFW continued to invest in community connection through rides, events, and gatherings that brought people together around shared values.

From group rides and mixers to new ideas like Momentum: Books in Motion, we created spaces for conversation, learning, and relationship-building—recognizing that culture change happens when people feel connected to one another.

Advocacy for Safer Streets and Better Mobility
In 2025, BikeDFW supported advocacy efforts focused on safer streets, connected trails, and more inclusive transportation systems across North Texas.

This included:

Supporting local and regional safe streets conversations

Collaborating with allied organizations on mobility and transit issues

Elevating the voices of people who rely on biking, walking, and transit every day

Our role wasn’t always to lead—but often to support, connect, and amplify.

By the Numbers (Because It Matters)
While relationships and stories matter most, impact does too. In 2025, BikeDFW:

Reached hundreds of people through education and safety programs

Supported dozens of events, rides, and community activations

Built partnerships across the Dallas–Fort Worth region

Continued advocacy and collaboration in support of safer streets

Looking Ahead to 2026
The work of 2025 set the stage for what’s ahead.

In 2026, BikeDFW is building on this momentum with:

Expanded education programs

Youth bike rodeos and traffic safety initiatives

Community campaigns focused on kindness and visibility

Stronger regional partnerships

Continued advocacy for safer, more connected transportation

We’re excited—not because the work is done, but because it’s taking shape.

Thank You for Being Part of This
None of this happens without the people who show up—our members, volunteers, instructors, partners, community allies, and supporters.

Whether you rode with us, volunteered, taught a class, partnered on an event, or simply believed in the work, thank you.

Together, we’re building a North Texas where bicycling is safer, more visible, and more supported.

👉 Want to be part of what’s next?

Celebrating Connection, Legacy & Community: The 2025 UPSHIFT Award Winners

https://www.bikedfw.org/new--updates/celebrating-connection-legacy-community-the-2025-upshift-award-winners

https://www.bikedfw.org/new--updates/celebrating-connection-legacy-community-the-2025-upshift-award-winners#comments

Uncategorized

On Wednesday night, the North Texas cycling community came together for an evening filled with joy, laughter, gratitude, remembrance, and deep community pride. This year’s UPSHIFT Awards brought more than 85 nominations, 749 individual voters, and a total of 2,947 votes cast to honor the riders, partners, groups, advocates, and leaders who make cycling in North Texas what it is.It was a night that reminded us why this community is so extraordinary — a communit [...]

On Wednesday night, the North Texas cycling community came together for an evening filled with joy, laughter, gratitude, remembrance, and deep community pride.

This year’s UPSHIFT Awards brought more than 85 nominations, 749 individual voters, and a total of 2,947 votes cast to honor the riders, partners, groups, advocates, and leaders who make cycling in North Texas what it is.

It was a night that reminded us why this community is so extraordinary — a community that shows up, holds each other up, and continues to believe that cycling can connect people, strengthen neighborhoods, and make our region a better place to live.

Below are this year’s winners, celebrated on stage and lifted up by a community who recognizes just how much they give.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Bikin’ Mike Keel
The evening opened with a moment of gratitude for someone whose influence spans decades.

Known by most simply as “Bikin’ Mike,” Mike Keel has taught, mentored, coached, and encouraged thousands of riders across North Texas. His decades of leadership, volunteerism, and kindness have left a legacy that radiates far beyond the classroom or the trail.

A close friend and longtime riding partner, Woody Smith, joined the stage to share heartfelt words about Mike’s profound impact — before Mike received the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Heart & Soul Award: Victoria Kangrega
This year marks a meaningful shift: beginning next year, this award will be named the Jaime Ramirez Heart & Soul Award in honor of Jaime’s joy, kindness, and love for community.

This year’s recipient, Victoria Kangrega, is described as the heartbeat of her riding community — “the glue” that holds people together, the warmth that welcomes everyone, from first-time riders to Ironman athletes. Her kindness, positivity, and steady encouragement represent everything the Heart & Soul Award stands for.

Mobility Champion of the Year:
Dee Leggett & Trey Walker (DART)
This year’s nominees helped advance one of North Texas’s most significant mobility connections: the 24-mile Cotton Belt/Silver Line Trail.

Our winners, Dee Leggett and Trey Walker, played a key leadership role in bringing this transformational corridor to life — connecting cities, transit stations, businesses, neighborhoods, and thousands of future riders. Their work will benefit our region for generations.

Educator of the Year: Ms. Brittnee Freund
This year’s winner created something magical: a joyful, music-filled, community-supported Bike Bus that brings children, families, teachers, police, fire departments, and neighbors together every week.

Her creativity, advocacy, route planning, safety efforts, and heart-centered leadership have inspired students who now wish they could bike to school every day. Ms. Brittnee Freund represents the transformative power of teaching.

Vision Zero Award (TIE): Jessica Scott & Jeff Kitner
In a rare and meaningful outcome, this year’s Vision Zero Award ended in a tie — honoring two leaders whose work advances safer, more connected streets for everyone.

Jessica Scott played a central role in the new Dallas Bike Plan, integrating walking, cycling, and micromobility into Dallas’s future and ensuring the city’s mobility decisions reflect people, not just cars.

Jeff Kitner has been a tireless advocate for trails, leading Friends of Northaven Trail and supporting the work of the Dallas Trails Coalition with vision, persistence, and lived cycling experience.

Both have shaped critical pieces of our infrastructure future — and both are deeply deserving.

Trail Champion of the Year: Friends of the Northaven Trail
Beginning next year, this award will proudly become the Richard White Trail Champion of the Year Award honoring Richard’s profound legacy.

This year’s winners, Friends of the Northaven Trail, have transformed one of Dallas’ most cherished trails through years of volunteer work — planting trees, fundraising, organizing cleanups, hosting rides, and partnering with the city to ensure the trail remains connected, safe, and welcoming.

Bike Club / Group of the Year: I Bike Rosemont
What began as a small neighborhood ride-to-school effort has grown into one of the most joyful, community-powered biking movements in Dallas.

Monthly rides draw 50–60 participants; their yearly celebration draws more than 200. They’ve donated bikes, helmets, and racks, led safety initiatives, and helped propel a $1.7 million Safe Routes to School project.

This year’s winner, I Bike Rosemont, shows what can happen when neighbors ride together.

Social Ride of the Year: Femme Pédale
This ride has changed lives.

Femme Pédale creates a safe, empowering, joyful space for women, nonbinary riders, and gender-diverse cyclists. Riders speak of going from borrowed bikes to century rides — because of the encouragement, safety, and celebration this group provides.

Their impact is reshaping who cycling is for in North Texas.

Bike Shop of the Year: Dallas Bike Works
Known for expertise, trustworthiness, and genuine passion, Dallas Bike Works supports riders of all ages and experience levels with equal kindness and enthusiasm. Their involvement in rides, advocacy, and community programs makes them more than a shop — they are a cornerstone of Dallas cycling culture.

Bike-Friendly Business of the Year: Pull Through Coffee
A beloved gathering spot for riders at White Rock Lake, Pull Through Coffee hosts rides, supports women cyclists, organizes community events, gives back through lake cleanups, and greets every rider with warmth.

Riders say you feel like family the moment you walk in — and that is exactly why they are this year’s winner.

A Night of Joy, Memory, and Community
The evening closed with heartfelt gratitude — for the riders, community groups, sponsors, volunteers, families, and everyone who shows up and builds community through kindness and connection.

We honored the memories of Jaime Ramirez and Richard White, celebrated legacy through Bikin’ Mike, and lifted up the people who make cycling accessible, joyful, and safe.

This community is extraordinary.

And we cannot wait to celebrate with you again next year.

Irving Chooses a Vote — and We Choose Connection

https://www.bikedfw.org/new--updates/irving-chooses-a-vote-and-we-choose-connection

https://www.bikedfw.org/new--updates/irving-chooses-a-vote-and-we-choose-connection#comments

Uncategorized

Last night, the Irving City Council joined Plano, Farmers Branch, and Highland Park in voting to hold a public referendum next May on whether to withdraw from the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system. The council chambers were full — filled with neighbors, riders, cyclists, advocates, and community leaders who came to speak about what DART means to them and to our region.Passion, Presence, and PurposeJust like in Plano, DART leadership was [...]

Last night, the Irving City Council joined Plano, Farmers Branch, and Highland Park in voting to hold a public referendum next May on whether to withdraw from the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system.
The council chambers were full — filled with neighbors, riders, cyclists, advocates, and community leaders who came to speak about what DART means to them and to our region.

Passion, Presence, and PurposeJust like in Plano, DART leadership was present — including the CEO, Board Chair, and several Board members— to answer questions and share the system’s progress. Unlike what one might expect, the format gave them the same two minutes that each of us had. And while that may have limited what they could say, their message was clear: DART wants to work with Irving, not against it.
Speaker after speaker — from students to business leaders to people with disabilities — echoed the same theme:
“Don’t take this to a vote. Don’t turn away. Choose connection.”
The remarks were passionate, informed, and deeply human. No one denied that DART has challenges — but most of us who rely on or advocate for it know that improvement comes from partnership, not separation.

Why This MattersThis vote isn’t just about trains and buses. It’s about how people move through life.
For cyclists, DART means safe first- and last-mile connections.
For people with disabilities, it means independence through paratransit service.
For workers, it means access to jobs that might otherwise be unreachable.
And for all of us, it means a more connected, less congested, more sustainable region.
When cities withdraw, those links begin to unravel — and the people who depend on them are the ones who feel it first.

Where We Go from HereNow, the decision moves to the voters next May. That gives us six months to make sure every person in our region understands what’s at stake.
Over the coming months, BikeDFW and our partners will be working to:

Share accurate, accessible information about what DART provides — and what leaving would mean.

Reach out to the communities most affected — people with disabilities, students, workers, older adults — and ensure their stories are heard.

Build bridges between advocates, from cyclists to transit riders to environmental and accessibility groups, to stand together for connection.

We have a short window — but we have strong voices, deep commitment, and a shared belief that mobility is community.

The Road AheadIf there’s one thing this process has reminded us, it’s that public participation matters. Even when votes don’t go the way we hope, showing up still changes the conversation.
Over the next six months, we’ll need to stay strong, stay positive, and stay focused on facts. The future of DART — and the freedom to move safely and affordably across North Texas — depends on it.

Did You Know?Every weekday, DART provides nearly 150,000 trips across 700 square miles of North Texas — connecting 13 cities through rail, bus, paratransit, and microtransit services.
Each one of those trips represents someone getting to work, to school, to a doctor, or to someone they love.
That’s what connection looks like — and that’s why we’ll keep showing up.

Standing Up for Connection: Reflections on Plano’s DART Vote Tonight

https://www.bikedfw.org/new--updates/standing-up-for-connection-reflections-on-planos-dart-vote-tonight

https://www.bikedfw.org/new--updates/standing-up-for-connection-reflections-on-planos-dart-vote-tonight#comments

Uncategorized

Earlier tonight, more than 100 community members filled the Plano City Council chambers — and many more tried to join online — to speak about the city’s potential withdrawal from Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART).We saw neighbors, cyclists, transit riders, parents, advocates, and people with disabilities show up to share what connection means to them. It was a long evening — more than four hours of public comment — but what stood out most wasn’t the length of the meeting. It was the heart in the room.

The Bike Community Showed UpBikeDFW was proud to see so many familiar faces and new ones, too — cyclists who understand that bikes and transit are partners in a livable, connected North Texas. We showed up not because DART is perfect, but because it’s possible. Because when bikes, buses, and trains work together, they give people real choices about how to move safely and affordably.
Thank you to everyone who gave up your evening to speak, or to simply be present. Your presence reminded everyone that mobility is more than infrastructure — it’s community.

Why We Were ThereThis vote wasn’t just about whether Plano stays in DART. It was about the future of connection in our region — about whether we keep building bridges between cities, or start building walls around them.
DART connects people to jobs, schools, healthcare, and family. It connects cyclists to stations, paratransit users to independence, and neighborhoods to opportunity.
Leaving DART doesn’t fix the system’s flaws — it just makes them harder to solve. The people who spoke last night weren’t defending the status quo; they were defending the possibility of a more connected future.

What We SawThroughout the evening, city staff and consultants presented their case for leaving DART. Then, DART’s own leadership — including the CEO, Board Chair, and past Chair — were invited to speak briefly in response. It was striking to see how uneven the exchange of time and attention felt, especially given what’s at stake for thousands of riders.
Still, those few minutes from DART’s leaders carried a clear message: they want to work with Plano, not against it. They want to improve service, strengthen safety, and keep this regional network intact.
And that’s what we want too.

What’s NextThe council ultimately voted to move forward with a public referendum — a decision that means this conversation is far from over. In the months ahead, there will be opportunities for all of us to continue sharing our stories, data, and lived experiences.
For BikeDFW, this moment reinforces why we do what we do. Over and over, we heard how the Silver Line feels like the missing link that will help people move more freely across the Metroplex. Many visitors shared plans to combine the train with their bike commute or weekend rides, saying it finally feels easier to “go multimodal.”

Our team had a blast hosting the MultiModal Challenge, where visitors who rode both their bike and the Silver Line could find our table, say the password “Connections,” and scan a special QR code to enter for prizes. The enthusiasm was contagious — and we can’t wait to draw our winners this Wednesday, October 30!

The day perfectly reflected what BikeDFW is all about: building bridges between people, places, and modes of movement. We’re grateful to DART for inviting us to celebrate this milestone, to our team for all their work, and to everyone who stopped by to chat, share a story, or make a new connection.

Stay tuned to our social channels for the MultiModal Challenge prize announcement, and keep an eye out for more opportunities to roll, ride, and connect across North Texas.
