Investing in the Future of Cycling

BikeDFW partnered with the Cities of Allen and Irving on May 15th for Allen Family Bike Day and the Irving Bicycle Fest to present bicycle safety programs for kids (aka, Bike Rodeos). A bike rodeo is a bicycle skills event that provides an opportunity for kids to practice and develop skills to become better bicyclists and avoid typical crashes. Our goals were to actively engage kids in learning, practicing, and demonstrating their bicycle handling skills in a fun, noncompetitive atmosphere. Hopefully, the participants were encouraged to become lifelong cyclists. And... these events were a lot of fun for us!

Friday, 07 May 2010 10:27

bike_month540x59

May 21st is National Bike to Work Day, an event started and promoted by the League of American Bicyclists to encourage the use of alternative transportation by getting Americans to leave their cars at home one day a year and ride a bicycle to work. We encourage our friends to get involved by organizing and participating in an BTW event to help raise awareness of this green and healthy alternative for getting to work. You can download materials related to Bike to Work Day from the LAB web site.

We've started a list of Bike to Work Day events in the DFW area. We hope you'll help promote this fun way of raising awareness of bicycle commuting by adding your event - email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or leave a comment below.

OK North Texas... time to get green!
Tuesday, 13 April 2010 21:35

2010earthdayThursday, April 22, is Earth Day. The Sierra Club is encouraging people to celebrate by making a pledge to do one small thing to help the environment; whether it's reusing shopping bags, planting a tree, OR... (and we like this)... riding your bicycle for one trip instead of using your car.

As pledges come in from around the country, the Earth Day map shows how green each state is on a per capita basis. Oregon is currently in the lead... what a surprise!

Although Texas has a dubious (even horrible?) reputation when it comes to the environment, things are changing... even in our state where carbon is king. North Texans can do their part to raiseTexas' green factor by going to the Earth Day map and making a pledge to do one simple thing for the environment on Earth Day. And... you might even win a trip for two to Hawaii! More information is also available in The Insider newsletter.

TxDOT Open House Meetings in North Texas
Wednesday, 05 May 2010 16:02

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be holding open house meetings in Fort Worth and Farmers Branch/Dallas on Thursday May 6, 2010.

Both meetings are from 4-7 PM

Farmers Branch
Farmers Branch City Hall
13000 William Dodson Parkway
Farmers Branch, TX, 75234

Fort Worth
TxDOT, Fort Worth District Regional Training Center
2501 S W Loop 820
Fort Worth, TX, 76133

Here the description of these meetings from TxDOT.

"TxDOT is updating our Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan, and isasking for your help in developing this blueprint for how Texas addresses its future transportation needs. This plan will provide a framework for developing and implementing a multi-modal transportation system through 2035, including highways, rail, water ports, airports, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, pipelines and Intelligent Transportation Systems. The Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan is the foundation for many planning efforts underway at TxDOT."

"Because transportation is important to all Texans, we are holding two rounds of open-house meetings to encourage comments and questions about the plan. Following the public meetings, the feedback we receive will be analyzed for development of the plan. We anticipate submitting a plan for final public comment and adoption by the Texas Transportation Commission later this fall."

More information and meeting schedule is available in TxDOT's "Help Shape the Future of Texas" newsletter.

BikeDFW is providing input on TxDOT's Statewide Long-Range Transportation Plan

At the invitation of TxDOT, Marc Mumby (president) and Warren Casteel (committe chair) represented BikeDFW at a similar TxDOT meeting for stakeholders in Fort Worth on April 28, 2010. "Stakeholders" included city and country transportation planners and a few organizations like BikeDFW. We both pointed out the importance of incorporating sustainable transportation alternatives, including bicycling, as integral components of the plan. It was a receptive audience. It was clear that TxDOT, and the consulting firms they've hired to develop the 2035 transportation plan, are VERY interested in including alternative transportation and bicycling in the plan. BikeDFW has also submitted written comments to TxDOT.

Transportation planning in North Texas (and the rest of the country) is at a nexus. People (and maybe even TxDOT) are starting to understand that our present fossil fuel-based system of transportation is not sustainable. Right now, we have a unique opportunity to influence transportation planning in a way that will help us all adapt to a post-carbon future that is not that far away. A continuing stream of input, letting TxDOT know that people think inclusion of cycling is important, will help insure the incorporation of bike-friendly language into the plan. We hope that many of our pro-cycling friends will attend these meeting and express their opinions. You can also submit comments directly to TxDOT through their website.
