What is a League Cycling Instructor (LCI)?

First and foremost, an LCI is an experienced and knowledgeable cyclist who has the desire to educate bicyclists and motorists so they can safely share the road. LCIs are instructors certified to teach BikeEd, the League of American Bicyclist’s education program. Simply knowing how to ride a bike is not the same as knowing how to operate a bike safely and legally. Using BikeEd curricula, LCIs instruct both children and adults so they can learn the skills and techniques needed to feel safe and comfortable riding a bicycle on the road. LCIs are certified to teach:

  • Traffic Skills 101 (Road I) - the basic introductory/intermediate course for adult cyclists
  • Traffic Skills 102 (Road II) - an advanced adult course
  • Kids I - designed for parents, instructors explain how to teach a child to ride a bike. Topics covered include how to perform a bicycle safety check, helmet fitting and bike sizing. Includes 10-minute 'Kids Eye View' video and a brochure for parents
  • Kids II - this 7-hour class for 5th and 6th graders covers the same topics as Road I, including on-bike skills as well as choosing safe routes for riding
In addition, LCI's may teach special courses such as "Group Cycling Skills". "Race Skills" or other courses which may be developed by the League.

As independent contractors, LCIs are not employees of the League or BikeDFW. They have the freedom to schedule and organize classes to fit their needs, as long as the “need to know” elements are covered for a given age group. LCIs set their own fees and schedules, and work with community centers, bike shops, bike clubs, schools, motorists, and other places where bicycle education can be promoted. The League does not organize classes, but classes may be publicized for free on the League’s website. BikeDFW will handle online enrollment, payment and promotion of courses for LCI's in North Texas.

What does it take to become a League Cycling Instructor (LCI)?

  • The first step is to become a member of the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). Membership is required, and the annual dues start at $35.00.
  • The next step is to pass Traffic Skills 101 (Road I) course. The registration fee varies but is generally around $65.00. A score of at least 85% is a prerequisite to continue.
  • The final step is to complete the LCI Certification Seminar. The seminar is usually held during the course of a single weekend. There will be 20 hours of instruction, exercises and practice teaching both in the classroom and on the bike. Registration is $200 and includes the manuals, and the teaching and support materials you’ll need to conduct a course.
